Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Occasional anxiety is a protective mechanism that helps us make important decisions. Temporary worry or fear is normal and subsides shortly after the triggering event. An anxiety disorder develops when the anxiety does not go away and gets worse over time. The symptoms interfere with daily activities such as school or work performance and get in the way of building healthy relationships.

Symptoms are felt in your body as muscle tension, stomach or back pain, racing heart, sleep problems, feeling restless or easily fatigued. Sometimes these symptoms worsen and can turn into a panic attack - where most people feel short of breath and think they are having a heart attack.

Good news is that you don’t have to live with anxiety. It is one of the most treatable mental health conditions and we have the tools to share with you for a speedy recovery.

Social Anxiety

Similar symptoms to generalized anxiety disorder but focused on the fear of certain or all social situations that involve people. For example, a person with social anxiety avoids social situations for fear of humiliation, being judged, or rejected. This intense fear keeps the person isolated, and school or work performance is affected along with developing healthy relationships.

But social anxiety disorder doesn’t have to stop you from reaching your potential. Treatment can help you overcome your symptoms.

Major depressive disorder or clinical depression cause severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and approach daily activities.

The most common symptoms of depression are persistent sadness, feeling of hopelessness, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, thoughts of death or suicide, decreased energy, headaches, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping. Depression can happen at any age but in younger ages it can present with more prominent irritability than low mood. Sometimes medications taken for physical illnesses may cause side effects that contribute to depression. Other risk factors include chronic illness, family history of depression, substance use, major life changes, trauma, and stress.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please schedule an appointment today.

Insomnia is experienced by a difficulty in falling or staying asleep or waking up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. Many people experience short term or acute insomnia because of stress, a traumatic event, medications, or a medical condition. It is important to find out why insomnia has developed to get the right treatment. The solution could be as simple as changing your daily habits to include daily practice of stress management, reduce the intake of daily stimulants or a few changes to your sleep hygiene.

Zumaya uses several approaches to help you sleep better to include cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. An evidenced based approach that consists of strategies for reducing sleep interfering thoughts and worries, managing stress, calming an active mind, and relaxing to allow sleep to happen.

We can help you understand your biological clock so that you can start to fall asleep naturally without the use of sleeping pills.

Habits + Addictions

We know that poor habits can get in the way of school, work and keep you from developing healthy relationships - that spiral into other unhealthy coping behaviors such as overeating or substance use.

So, if bad habits cause so much pain, why do we keep doing them? Why is it so hard to stop?

Come find out why it has been so hard to stop. Zumaya can help you find out why in just two sessions. Make an appointment today.

Mental health and physical health go hand in hand. When your body doesn’t feel good, your mental health suffers too and visa versa.

Mental health symptoms in men typically show up as irritability, anger, or aggressiveness. These symptoms may lead to feeling restless, poor sleep, high-risk activities, increased use of alcohol or drugs and even suicide ideation.

In the body, mental health symptoms are felt as headaches, digestive issues, neck/back pain without a known physical cause. If you haven’t noticed these symptoms, your family, friends, or coworkers certainly have. Think back…someone has asked you to “chill out, take a vacation” or perhaps the room clears when you walk in?

Before you conclude that you are depressed or anxious, check your testosterone level. Research shows that men after age 30 experience a gradual decline of testosterone so keep tabs on that too! The most common symptoms of low testosterone that are also symptoms of depression are:

  • Moodiness and irritability

  • Decreased sex drive

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Difficulties with concentration and memory

If low testosterone is not the problem, schedule an appointment with ZUMAYA today. Discover the root problem of your symptoms and learn how to get rid of it. It is easier to feel nothing. It takes courage to see the truth and to address the problem.

If you think it is stress, burnout or plain old feeling tired-check out the Preventative Programs where you can exercise your brain to help alleviate stress, form strong connections all while keeping up with work.

Type 1 Diabetes

It is important to connect to mental healthcare as an essential support to living with T1D.

The everyday work of taking care of your health, counting carbs, dosing, planning meals, worrying about lows and highs can be tiring not only physically but also emotionally. ZUMAYA has several years of experience working at The Barbara Davis Center, a world renowned T1D center for children and adults. Our experience is extensive from newly diagnosed patient education, ongoing psychosocial support to being an integral part of the Latino Diabetes Care Program.

We would like to be a part of your T1D Team.

“School or no school?”

Dating + Relationships

We take a therapeutic approach to help you improve your dating, love life and with developing healthy relationships. There are many reasons why we struggle with building healthy relationships. It could be social anxiety, low self-esteem, a fear of rejection, negative view of the self or sometimes we just need a little help finding ourselves.

Come find out which behavioral patterns contribute to your struggles and PRACTICE new skills that will get you closer to being your most authentic self whether you need a little help with flirting techniques or something deeper like changing old behaviors.

This is not a couple’s program, it is for individuals that choose to work on strategies that will help them get closer to a loved one or for people who are dating, want to date, have found it difficult to date, are looking for a soul mate, or generally want to attract healthy relationships.

Chronic Illness + Mental Health

Research suggests that people who have depression and another medical illness tend to have more severe symptoms of both illnesses. Temporary feelings of sadness are expected, but if these and other symptoms last longer than a couple of weeks, you may have depression. Symptoms of depression may continue even as a person’s physical health improves.

Zumaya offers you many years of experience working in primary care, specialty doctors and have seen the drastic improvement in quality of life when mental health wellness techniques are integrated in the physical health treatment goals.

A collaborative care approach that includes both mental and physical health care can improve overall health. Research has shown that treating depression and chronic illness together can help people better manage both their depression and their chronic disease.

Schedule your First Session to start on the path of mind and body health. We will gladly work with your doctor, family, friends, and caregivers. As a team we are strong. Learn more about the links between chronic illness and your mental health here.
